PREDICTIONS FOR JOURNALISM 2026 · NIEMAN LAB
Data needs to drive conversations, not division

My prediction for journalism in 2026. Partisan stat-dumping has taught many readers to see data as a weapon and judge a chart by whose side it seems to take. Data journalism needs fewer flashy charts and more shared vocabulary: projects run as ongoing conversations, with interactive explainers, reader questions and open sessions, and data people who can facilitate and interview as well as chart.
