A brief history of (data) communication

My essay “A brief history of (data) communication” appears in Seeing the Unseeable: Data, Design, Art, edited by Julie Joyce, Stephen Nowlin and Hyesoo Christina Valentine and published by Hirmer, the book that accompanies the ArtCenter Galleries exhibition for the Getty’s PST ART.
The essay covers roughly 42,000 years of people recording information and sharing it with each other. My argument is the one behind all of my work: data has always been a form of communication, and the pictures are how we make the conversation possible.
